MOGADISHU (SOMALIUPDATE NEWS) - The Somali Federal Government has dispatched a fact-finding mission to Beledweyne to investigate the cause of the plane crash at Ugas Khalif Airport in Beledweyne on Tuesday.

The plane from Mogadishu crashed on the runway during rollout after landing and none of its three crew members were hurt. It is not yet clear the cause of the incident.

On Wednesday, a delegation led by the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Abdullahi Salad visited Beledweyne and met with Hiiraan regional administration officials, the African Union Mission AMISOM.

Beledweyne airport manager Capt. Hussein Mohamud said the plane crashed after the pilot attempted to steer from a donkey on the runway.

Local officials earlier said the plane ferried humanitarian aid but local sources also report that the plane was transporting military supplies for the Djiboutian contingent of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) based in Beledweyne.  Beledweyne is a city in the central region of Hiiraan, where thousands of people were affected by the recent floods.

On Wednesday, the United States Embassy in Mogadishu said it noted with regret that the flight crashed on July 14 in Beledweyne while delivering food assistance to the Somali population in the region.

"While the loss of the aircraft and the food assistance onboard is unfortunate, we are relieved that the entire crew are safe and that no one on the ground was injured in the accident," said a statement from the U.S Mission in Somalia.
