    UN urged to renew sanctions on al-Shabaab leaders

    MOGADISHU (HORN OBSErVER) - United Nations Security Council was asked to renew sanctions on three al-Shabaab ring leaders amid Somali government intensified operations against the militants in south and central Somalia.

MOGADISHU (HORN OBSErVER) - United Nations Security Council was asked to renew sanctions on three al-Shabaab ring leaders amid Somali government intensified operations against the militants in south and central Somalia.

Geraldine Byrne Nason, permanent representative of Ireland to the United Nations, who is also chair of the Security Council Committee pursuant to Resolution 751 (1992) concerning Somalia said the move to further help the federal government of Somalia fight the insurgents.

"While it is too early to see the impact of these listings, an updated sanctions list can be a significant tool in supporting the federal government of Somalia in its fight against Al-Shabaab," said Nason.


Nason also noted that the committee received the comprehensive midterm update of the panel of experts on Somalia on May 14 and discussed the content at a second informal virtual meeting on June 4.

Al-Shabaab which was formed in 2006, has been fighting Somali government for more than a decade.

In 2016, the group took controlled of large swath territories in south and central Somalia.

African Union had deployed troops in Somali capital to help the government defeat the militant group.

The group lost many towns including the capital in 2011 after their fighters were defeated by Somali military backed African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom).
