NAIROBI (HORN OBSERVER) - Somali lawmakers in Kenya have called on the government to investigate alleged kidnappings of several Somali people in Nairobi's Eastleigh neighbourhood.

Kamukunji MP, Yusuf Hassan and his Garissa town counterpart Aden Duale have separately condemned the kidnappings.

"As a Somali community, this is something new for us. It has caused us a lot of anxiety in the last two days,” said Aden Duale.

Hassan called for speedy investigations into the kidnappings of at least five people including Hafsa Mohammed Lukman, Hafsa Abdulwahaab, Umulkheyr Omaan and a man identified as Mohamud Mohamed Haji (Burte) have been reportedly abducted by unknown people.

"Deeply concerned at the spate of kidnappings, rising violence, and gender-based killings sweeping through Kamukunji, which have sparked growing fear and panic in the community. I’ve written to the Inspector-General to take urgent and visible measures to protect civilians,” Hassan said in a tweet.

The family of Hafsa Mohammed Lukman made a missing person report at California police station in Eastleigh on June 15, when she went missing.

A video emerged online this past week showing Lukman covered on the face but with bruises. In the video, her kidnappers tell her to inform her sister to send money for her release.

"I have been kidnapped, and they’re demanding ransom. Please, send it," Lukman stated- her voice barely heard in the video due to the wounds and scars on her mouth.

Just as the news of Hafsa was doing round across the social media platforms, a new victim was reported missing.

Hafsa Abdulwahab, another victim was last seen at her watermelon store in Kayole. Family members said they reported the matter at the local Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Cases of kidnapping have become rampant in the recent past with abductors going to extra lengths to ensure their hatched scheme comes to fruition.
