In a letter  signed by the Mayor of Mogadishu, Omar Mohamud Mohamed aka Omar Fillish and addressed to the Salaam Somali Bank dated on May 10 ordered the closure of the account 799, account commonly used by the administration and in the same letter requested from the Bank to open two new business accounts.

"Salaam Bank, which this letter is directly addressed, is requested to close the account number 799 and open two new business accounts 31935449 and 31551472” The letter which a copy of it obtained by Horn Observer read in part.

The country’s auditor general Mohamed Mohamud Ali rejected the move, calling it "illegal” and urged the Benadir regional administration to withdrew its decision and comply with the country’s laws.

The scheme to close the official account is a scheme by Villa Somalia’s plan to get an alternative source of funding for their election campaign, whereas the deputy mayor of Mogadishu Ali Yare Ali has already announced his candidacy to run a federal parliamentary seat.

Many analysts believe that the money collected onwards through these clandestine accounts will be used to promote Villa Somalia’

Somalia recently launched an Independent Anti-Corruption Commission (IACC) which according to its recent statement vowed to tackle all sorts of corruption.

According to Avv. Mohamed Hussein Hamud,  "Somalia’s IACC intends to build an effective system against corruption and enhance the country’s governance system in all sectors by disseminating information on good practices in order to strengthen capacities at the national level and to build confidence and encourage cooperation, however, we are facing significant challenges and that is why we see national, regional and international cooperation is needed,”
