HARGEISA (HORN OBSERVER) - Two doctors hailing from northern Somalia have been forcefully deported by Mogadishu government to Hargeisa, former foreign minister for the breakaway region, Somaliland confirmed Thursday.

Dr. Edna Adan Ismail who also once served as the special envoy to the Somalia and Somaliland talks has told the media that two doctors working with Dr. Edna Adan Ismail's Maternity Hospital in Harigesa were detained in Mogadishu for three days before they released on Tuesday.

The doctors who were heading to Kenya’s capital, were transit at Aden Adde Airport at the time of the arrest.

"He is a trainee medical worker. He was travelling with a valid Somaliland passport with a valid Kenyan-issued visa," she said.

Dr. Ismail further blamed the authorities in Mogadishu of destroying Somaliland passports belonging to the doctors.

"If Somalia knew the law, these transgressors would not have taken their passports or torn them, they would not have been held hostage for three days," she said.

Somali government has not yet commented on the incident which could further deteriorate the relations between Somalia and Somaliland which declared its secession from Somalia more than three decade ago.

According Dr. Ismail, the doctors will travel to Kenya again with their passports renewed but are expected to pass through Addis Ababa.

In 1991, Somaliland announced to have broken with Somalia which formerly consist of former British Somaliland Protectorate and former Italian Somaliland.

Despite relative peace and succeeding to hold democratic elections, Somaliland is still struggling to gain international recognition.
