Mogadishu, Somalia (Horn Observer) Somali Journalists Syndicate, a local media watchdog in Somalia has today launched a three-day media training to enhance the skills of over 26 local journalists drawn from different media houses in Somali capital.

The training aiming at enhancing media freedom and safety of journalists kicked off at Armaan Halls in Mogadishu.

Speaking at the opening of the ceremony, the Secretary General of the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) said the training will be part of several upcoming workshops funded by Canadian embassy which will enrich the journalists with safety skills.

"This training which is supported by Canada, is aimed at training about 26 journalists. SJS is the first Somali media organization given the chance by Canada Fund For Local Initiatives, to hold trainings to sharpen the skills of the journalists. We will move these training to other parts of the country including southwest, Hirshabelle and others,” Mumn said.

According to Mumin, the trainings supported by Canada will target close to 100 journalists cross Somalia.

On his part, SJS Project coordinators, Ahmed Mohamed Adan has urged the participants to make use of the chances offered during the training, saying the courses will help the members to enhance their safety mechanism during their work and outside.

"I think, this is an opportunity for all of us, I am happy to witness that SJS succeeded to hold two important trainings for journalists working in the capital in the course of two weeks. We would feel proudness, when we see the trained journalists implementing the skills acquired during the trainings,” Adan said.

Today’s training comes less than two weeks after SJS concluded another three-day training on Human Rights Journalism.

The late July workshop trained about 25 journalists from the capital.
