JOWHAR (HORN OBSERVER) - At least three regional lawmakers have been wounded in a hand grenade explosion in Jowhar town which lies some 30km north of Somali capital.

Witnesses who spoke to the media confirmed that unknown assailants had hurled the bomb at a residential house in the centre of the town which is the seat of Hirshabelle state administration.

Among the lawmakers are Adan Mohamed Muse, Duwane Farah Ali and Osman Abdullahi Dhore.

No group claimed the responsibility for the blast which comes as Hirshabelle state is in preparation of senatorial elections but it has the hallmarks of al-Shabaab attacks.

Previously al-Shabaab militant group had killed government officials, lawmakers and ministers of the state government.

Last September, Al-Shabaab assassin squad killed Nur Hashi Warsame, minister for religious and endowment affairs in Hirshabelle state.

The group also conducts ambushes on convoys of Somali and African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) travelling along Mogadishu-Jowhar Road.
Somali forces backed by Amisom troops had been fighting al-Shabaa fighters for the past decade.

Since 2011, Al-Shabaab lost many major towns including the country’s capital, Mogadishu following days long fighting with the allied forces.

The group currently controls handful villages and small towns in central and Southern Somalia but still is capable of carrying out deadly attacks in major towns.
