Yusuf, who was in his 70s, was walking to his home near the Nasteho neighbourhood, Wadajir district in Mogadishu when gunmen approached and shot him several times in the head and chest.

"We are saddened by the death of elder Yusuf Adan Madey. I have known him for twenty years. He was a leading figure in Somalia's peace process. He comes from Galjecel clan," a family member Mohamud Adan told Horn Observer.

A police officer Abshir Nur said the police did not find the killers when they reached the area.  Nobody was arrested for the assassination which took place in a broad day light.

Family members said they did not know any reason that could lead to Yusuf's murder.
