Mogadishu (Horn Observer) Somalia on Tuesday succeeded to evacuate 73 Somali citizens who were stuck in the ongoing conflict in Sudan, bringing the total number of evacuees 242, officials said.

According to the United Nations, hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes to find places of greater safety, at any cost, and have been facing abuses en route. Thousands remain trapped in residential areas where fighting has been taking place, facing air strikes, shelling and the use of heavy weapons, trying to use any period of calm to reach places of relative safety. People also continue to be forced from their homes by the RSF and suffer looting, extortion, acute shortages of food, water, electricity, fuel, limited access to healthcare, limited communication and limited cash due to the closure of banks.

Concerned about the safety and the security of the Somali citizens, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation succeeded to evacuate 73 the Somali citizens on the fourth consecutive flights from Sudan.

"Somalia continues the process of evacuating its most needy citizens, including the sick, children, the elderly and women, as the majority of Somalis in Sudan are students and families.” The Ministry said,  "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation renews its thanks and appreciation to its partners from countries and international organizations for coordinating to ensure the speedy evacuation of Somali nationals and their safe return to the homeland.”

Last week, a plane carrying 169 Somali evacuees landed at Mogadishu International Airport, where they were received by Deputy Prime Minister,  Mr. Salah Ahmed Jama, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation,  Mr. Abshir Omar Jama.
