ADDIS ABABA (HORN OBSERVER) – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has formally apologized to the African Development Bank (AfDB) for the tensions that arose last year, leading to the withdrawal of the bank's international staff following an attack on senior officials.

The AfDB confirmed the receipt of the apology, stating, "We have received formal apologies from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on behalf of the Government of Ethiopia.” This has prompted the AfDB to reinstate its international staff and resume normal operations within Ethiopia.

"In light of the productive meetings between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Adesina, and the formal apologies of the government and the firm commitments of the Prime Minister to address the issues related to the incident, the African Development Bank will now resume its normal operations in Ethiopia. All international staff of the African Development Bank will now return to Ethiopia,” the bank announced.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, expressing commitment to strengthening partnerships with the AfDB, stated, "Our partnership with the African Development Bank Group is essential to #Ethiopia’s food sovereignty endeavors. We remain committed to strengthening our relations through the support of my brother President of the Bank, @akin_adesina.”

Despite the resolution, the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of millions of dollars intended for the AfDB remain undisclosed by the bank. According to Ethiopian officials, the $6 million earmarked as the Ethiopian government’s contribution mysteriously vanished.

Officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the funds, transferred as per AfDB’s instructions, appear to have ended up in Latin America. Investigations into the missing funds are expected to commence, shedding light on the mysterious diversion and providing clarity on the chain of events that led to this significant diplomatic incident.
