Ammar Bashier, spokesperson for the Special Support Groups (SSG), a commando force under the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF,) revealed that the period between March and September 2024 witnessed significant achievements in hostage and human shield rescue operations.

He explained that these operations were carried out through joint efforts by various regular forces, including the SSG, which conducted specialized missions in several areas. Notably, these efforts rescued nearly 30 hostages in the Halfaya area, north of Khartoum. The operations also included the rescue of a German woman named Christine in Omdurman, who had been detained following the killing of her Sudanese husband by the RSF militia.

Sudanese websites circulated videos documenting the "Halfaya 3" operation, which successfully freed the hostages. The videos included an interview with the German woman, who expressed her deep gratitude to Sudan and its people, affirming her desire to remain in Omdurman, which she described as the place where she had spent the happiest days of her life. She expressed great loyalty to the locals, highlighting her deep affection for them. The Governor of Khartoum visited her at her home, where she now lives with some of her pets, reaffirming the state’s solidarity and support.

Regarding the nature of the unit he represents, the SSG spokesperson emphasized that this force works faithfully under the command of the Sudanese Army, executing high-risk missions as directed by senior leadership. He added, "Our Islamic orientation binds us to principles of sacrifice and devotion in rescuing women and children from the grip of criminal militias. If the media calls us ‘Al-Bara ibn Malik’ or refers to us as ‘Mujahideen,’ it reflects their understanding of our mission to support the vulnerable. For us, jihad means defending and protecting them.

The spokesperson further explained that SSG members have undergone high-level training and gained extensive experience through their missions. He added that these capabilities are fully aligned with and directed by the Sudanese Army, which determines their deployment based on SAF priorities.
