The number of COVID-19 cases in Somalia on Wednesday report Jumps to 601 as death remain 28, the highest in the East African nations.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that one person living in an internally displaced camp has tested positive, in what could a dangerous turn to a country with already 2.6 million IDPs living in an overcrowded settments across the country in addition to 130,000 Somali refugee returnees, 15,000 asylum-seekers and 14,000 refugees at risk. In particular, the outbreak of COVID-19 in IDP settlements in Somalia, one of the most impoverished and fragile countries in the world, would be catastrophic.
UNHCR requires US$ 7 million to scale up the preparedness and response to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on persons of concern.
The disease has disrupted Somalia economy and livelihoods leading high inflation of markets and movement restrictions causing a slowdown of business activity that hurt daily-wage earners and casual workers in the country.
