Speaking at the recently held Embassies Business Fair and Conference, Mr. Mohamed Ali, Head of Trade and Commercial Attaché at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia, emphasized the pivotal role of Somalia and South Africa in unlocking new horizons in trade and economic diplomacy.

Mr. Ali reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to advancing economic diplomacy as a cornerstone of bilateral engagement, highlighting that trade and investment are no longer optional add-ons in diplomacy—they are the new currency of international relations.
Somalia & South Africa: Connecting Markets, Unlocking Africa’s Trade Potential
"Somalia and South Africa are shaping a new era of trade diplomacy. We are opening pathways for commerce in agriculture, fisheries, mining, and infrastructure. Together, we are unlocking Africa’s economic future.” said Mohamed Ali, Trade & Commercial Attaché, Embassy of Somalia.

At the Fair, the Embassy showcased its forward-looking agenda:
- Unlocking new trade routes
- Maritime & air connectivity
- Fisheries, agriculture, and mining opportunities
- Infrastructure development at the heart of national growth
Somalia stands ready to partner with South Africa as a gateway into the Horn of Africa, fostering mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities.

In 2023, Somalia and South Africa signed a landmark General Agreement, laying the foundation for deeper cooperation. The next step is transforming this framework into a comprehensive trade agreement that delivers tangible benefits for both economies.

Among the most promising initiatives: Direct flights between Johannesburg and Mogadishu, facilitating faster business and people-to-people connectivity. Maritime routes linking Durban to Mogadishu, reducing transit time to just four days. These developments are more than bilateral milestones. They are strategic steps toward realizing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), enabling the free movement of goods, services, and people across the continent.
