Mogadishu, Somalia (Horn Observer) — Somali federal forces, supported by troops from the Jubbaland administration, are advancing toward Jamaame district in the Lower Jubba region, intensifying one of the largest coordinated offensives against Al-Shabaab in southern Somalia in recent years.

The joint forces are moving along the main road leading to Jamaame and operating on both sides of the Jubba River. Al-Shabaab fighters have mounted resistance in an effort to slow the advance, as government-aligned troops aim to retake the town, which has remained under militant control since 2008.

For the second week in a row, government and regional units have carried out sustained operations around Jamaame. The forces have now reached areas near the Araare Bridge, a key strategic crossing located approximately 7 kilometers from the town. Al-Shabaab has established significant defensive positions around the bridge, viewing it as a critical line of defense.

The Jubbaland administration is deploying stabilization forcesto recently cleared areas along the Jamaame–Jilib corridor. These units are tasked with securing civilian populations, preventing Al-Shabaab fighters from regrouping, and establishing a foundation for renewed administrative control. Jubbaland officials say the deployment is a key step toward consolidating recent gains and expanding government authority across the region.

Military officials say that securing the Araare Bridge would open the final route into Jamaame, potentially allowing Somali and Jubbaland forces to enter the district for the first time in more than 15 years. Local residents report that civilians have begun leaving the area in fear of impending clashes.

The operation reflects growing coordination between federal and Jubbaland forces as Somalia continues its campaign to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s territorial footholds in the south.
