ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Horn Observer) Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has arrived in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to participate in the 39th African Union (AU) Summit, where leaders from across the continent will discuss critical issues including water security, economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and regional peace and stability, Somalia's presidential palace said.

President Hassan Sheikh’s participation underscores Somalia’s determination to defend its sovereignty and territorial integritywhile strengthening diplomatic ties with African nations. During the summit, he is scheduled for a series of high-level bilateral meetings with regional and continental leaders to express appreciation for Africa’s unified stance against external threats to Somalia’s borders, particularly citing recent illegal actions by Israel.

Adding to Somalia’s diplomatic momentum, the country has been elected to serve on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) for the 2026–2028 term, a historic milestone that places Somalia at the center of continental security decision-making. This platform allows Somalia to play a key role in shaping peace, stability, and conflict-resolution initiatives across Africa.

"Somalia stands ready to work with its partners to advance peace, security, and prosperity across the continent,” President Hassan Sheikh said ahead of the summit.

Through his engagement at the AU summit, President Hassan Sheikh is positioning Somalia not just as a nation defending its borders, but as an active contributor to Africa’s collective security and economic progress, signaling the country’s growing influence on the continental stage.
