In a significant step toward strengthening stability in a geopolitically sensitive region, the African Union has appointed Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete as its High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, African Union said in a statement.

The announcement was made by Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, who underscored the importance of experienced leadership in addressing the region’s complex and evolving challenges. Kikwete, who previously served as president of Tanzania, is widely regarded for his diplomatic approach and steady leadership style.

The Horn of Africa and the Red Sea sit at the crossroads of global commerce and regional security. This strategic corridor connects major international shipping routes, making stability in the area not only a regional priority but a global concern. However, ongoing conflicts, political tensions, and humanitarian pressures continue to test the resilience of countries across the region.

In his new role, Kikwete is expected to play a central part in easing tensions and fostering cooperation. His mandate includes advancing preventive diplomacy, encouraging inclusive political dialogue, and building trust among governments and communities. The goal is to create conditions for long-term peace rather than short-term fixes.

To achieve this, he will work closely with key regional organizations such as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the East African Community, alongside global partners including the United Nations and the League of Arab States. This coordinated approach reflects a growing recognition that lasting solutions require unified efforts across borders.

Kikwete’s appointment signals the African Union’s broader commitment to proactive diplomacy and African-led solutions to African challenges. By entrusting this mission to a leader with deep regional insight and international credibility, the organization aims to inject renewed momentum into peacebuilding efforts in one of the world’s most strategically vital regions.
