MOGADISHU, Somalia (HORN OBSERVER) - President Mohamed Farmaajo has sent Mogadishu mayor to former head of state, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed to hold discuss with him over ways demilitarize Somali capital following last week's deadly clashes between government forces and pro-opposition SNA soldiers.

Mogadishu mayor, Omar Mohamud Filish who visited residence of former Somali president Ahmed in Mogadishu has discussed with the opposition leader over the recent crisis in the capital and the need for restoration of peace in the city.

According to sources privy to the meeting, Mogadishu mayor has urged Sharif to help the government remove the armed forces out of the city.

No official statement over the outcome of the meeting was issued.


On 25th of last month, hundreds of Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers supporting the opposition had taken controlled of several districts of the capital after engaging deadly street battle with the government supporting forces.

The fighting between the soldiers had forced over 60,000 people flee their homes in the capital, according to UN statement last week.

Following international pressure, Farmaajo last Saturday appeared before the parliament to ask cancellation of the term and the decision to extend his term was rescinded.

The president also assigned his prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble to lead the country's preparation for the delayed elections and the management of the election security.

Roble on Monday invited the leaders of the country’s regional state leaders to attend a consultative conference which kick off on 22nd of this month, the announcement was welcome by majority of the opposition.
