MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - Somalia has restored diplomatic ties with Kenya after it cut the relations barely six months ago over alleged interference by Kenya.

In a statement, Somali information ministry said both countries thank [the] Emir of Qatar for his good offices in this regard.”

"The two governments have agreed to safeguard the friendly relations between the two countries based on the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in the internal affairs of the two countries, equality, cooperation and peaceful co-existence,” Abdirahman Yusuf, Deputy minister of Information said

Last December, Somalia had announced it had cut ties with Kenya, accusing Nairobi of political interference, claims Kenya denied.

The horn of Africa nation also ordered its ambassador, Mohamed Nur Tarsan, to return home and Kenya’s Lucas Tumbo ordered back to Nairobi.

Kenya and Somalia had long been in dispute over ownership of a triangular territory measuring 100,000km2 in the Indian Ocean boundary.

Somalia moved to International Court of Justice in 2014, citing what it termed as failure to settle the matter with her neighbour, Kenya bilaterally.

The hearing of the maritime dispute case was concluded last March after Kenya rejected to attend the oral proceedings of the court.

The court is expected announced its ruling in the forthcoming months.

The court verdict is final and not subject to appeal.
