MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - Somali government's chief agent at the ICJ, Mahdi Mohamed Gulaid has dismissed media reports claiming the horn of Africa nation to accepted to resolve its maritime dispute case with Kenya out of court.

Deputy prime minister, Gulaid has said the restoration of diplomatic ties with Kenya will have no effect on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) case.

"The maritime dispute will be finalized by the International Court of Justice following oral hearing completed in March 15-18 this year,” Guled said. "We are awaiting fair judgment Diplomatic relations between the two countries is separate issue.”

The development came after Mogadishu based Radio Mustaqbal reported that Somalia decided to drop maritime case at ICJ.

Both Somalia and Kenya are contesting ownership of a triangular territory measuring 100,000km2 in the Indian Ocean boundary.

Somalia went to ICJ in 2014 following what it termed as failure to settle the matter with her neighbour, Kenya bilaterally.

The ICJ concluded the case in March and is expected to issue its verdict in coming months.

Last Thursday, Somalia announced that it normalized its diplomatic ties with Kenya following mediation efforts by Qatari government.

Somalia had cut ties with Kenya in December 2020 and ordered its ambassador, Mohamed Nur Tarsan, to return home and Kenya’s Lucas Tumbo ordered back to Nairobi. Mogadishu accused Nairobi of political interference, claims Kenya denied.
