    Mogadishu blast death toll hits six

    MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - At least six people have been killed and several other wounded after a suspected al-Shabaab suicide bomber blew himself in Mogadishu.

MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - At least six people have been killed and several other wounded after a suspected al-Shabaab suicide bomber blew himself in Mogadishu.


Somali police spokesman Sadik Aden Ali said that Ahmed Bashane, Waberi district police commander, and Abdi Basid, deputy commander of Waliyow Adde police division, were among those who died in the attack.

"We can confirm that the suicide bomb attack killed six people including two senior police officers, three soldiers and a neighbour and injured six others this evening so far," Ali said.

Somali president Mohamed ABdullahi Farmaajo has condemned the attack. The president extended condolences to the families and relatives of the victims killed in the blast.


Through a statement posted on its affiliate media, al-Shabaab group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The group often targets security forces and other government officials in Mogadishu.

Al-Shabaab also targets hotels, restaurants, government installations and army bases.

In 2011, Somali military backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) forces had forced al-Shabaab militants out of Mogadishu following days long clashes.

The group now controls dozens of villages and small towns in central and southern Somalia.
