MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - The Somali government has warned that the flight suspension by Kenyan government could deteriorate the weak diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In an interview with state owned media, Somali Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Duran Farah said the move was shocking as it will have impact on people from both countries.

He said there was no direct communication between Mogadishu and Nairobi regarding the latter's decision to suspend all charter and scheduled flights to and from Somalia.

Kenya on Tuesday banned all commercial and cargo flights to and from Somalia until August, despite agreeing to reestablish diplomatic relations a few days ago.

Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said all flights between the two countries, except for UN aircraft on humanitarian missions and those delivering supplies medical COVID-19, remained suspended.

The NOTAM shall be valid for three months starting May 11, 2021 to August 9, 2021, the report reads.

There was no immediate reason for the suspension but it cames barely 24 hours after Somalia maintained khat imports remain banned.

Kenyan media reported that khat valued at $50,000 remained stranded at Jomo Kenyatta International Aiport Monday following the announcement by Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA).

Accordingto traders quoted by the local media, there was hope that Somalia would rescind its ban on khat following the resumption of ties last week.
