MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (HORN OBSERVER) - Somali president, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo signed a controversial resolution extending his term by two years into law, a move that could further plunged the fragile nation into chaos.

According to the country’s information minister, Osman A. Dubbe, President assented to the resolution which could lead Somalia to collide with its donors including EU, US and UK who strongly opposed the move.

"President Mohamed Abdullahi signed a one person and one vote law tonight, which was unanimously adopted on April 14," Information Minister.

Last Monday, 149 lawmakers voted to extend the president's mandate and the parliament, according to the Lower House speaker Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdurahman.

But the move was opposed by Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, the speaker of the Senate upper house who warned it would "lead the country into political instability, risks of insecurity and other unpredictable situations.”

In separate statements, EU, US and UK hinted possible sanctions and review of support to Somalia by saying they will consider reassessing bilateral relations with Somalia.

EU further warned that Somalia is on the brink of instability and division following outgoing president Farmajo's term extension by the Lower House.

"The European Union believes that the passage and signing of this resolution will divide Somalia, impose additional delays and constitute a grave threat to the peace and stability of Somalia and its neighbours,” said EU High Representative Josep Borrell.
