MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) – The Chairman of the Independent Anti-Corruption Commission (IACC) of the Federal Government of Somalia, Avv. Mohamed Hussein Hamud joined United Nations and other world anti-corruption authorities in attending the launch of GlobE Network, a new global network to end transnational corruption on Thursday.

"The Independent Anti-Corruption Commission (IACC) of the Federal Government of Somalia is delighted to join the launch of the GlobE Network which took place during the first-ever special session of the General Assembly against corruption. Somalia is a signatory of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and joining the GlobE Network was a timely opportunity for Somalia because IACC has recently launched its activities and is trying to strengthen its capabilities in the fight against corruption,” Avv. Hamud said.

The Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities (GlobE Network) ensures that anti-corruption authorities from all States parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and United Nations Member States are able to connect with their counterparts across the globe for faster, more efficient prosecution of corrupt networks and practices.

At the GlobE Network launch, Member States and anti-corruption experts gathered to examine the importance of international cooperation and the specific role to be played by the GlobE Network.

"Somalia’s IACC intends to build an effective system against corruption and enhance the country’s governance system in all sectors by disseminating information on good practices in order to strengthen capacities at the national level and to build confidence and encourage cooperation, however, we are facing significant challenges and that is why we see national, regional and international cooperation is needed,” added Avv. Hamud.

In late last year, Somalia ratified the UN Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), the world’s only legally-binding universal anti-corruption instrument, and a key instrument to sustain, manage and track countries’ fight against corruption. In a bid to strengthen the war on graft, the East African country has also ratified the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUPCC) and the Arab Anti-Corruption Convention as a member country of the Arab League.
