MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - Somalia's outgoing Upper House Speaker Abdi Abdullahi Hashi has been re-elected following voting in Somalia's capital amid boiling tensions between the country's top leaders.

Close to 50 electoral delegates are casting their votes to six senators under enhanced security under the Afisioni tent near Mogadishu International Airport.

In the first round of the election, Hashi garnered 44 votes out 46 possible votes with his challenger Saed Omar Hussein received nothing.

According to the electoral Commission, two votes got spoilt.

In another election, the delegates elected Salah Ahmed Jama as senator.

Jama got 29 votes while his opponent, Somalia' former chief justice, Ibrahim Idle Saleban 12 votes.

Five votes were declared invalid.

Four more senators will be before end of tbe day, according to the electoral Commission.

The election of Somaliland senators comes amid the political rift between the outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi and prime minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble is escalating despite international partners' call to end the dispute.

Somalia is expected to elect new president late this year as the mandate of Farmaajo has lapsed in February this year.
