IGAD raises concerns over Ethiopia-Somalia relations

DJIBOUTI (HORN OBSERVER) – The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has expressed deep concern about recent developments in the relationship between Ethiopia and Somalia.

DJIBOUTI (HORN OBSERVER) – The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has expressed deep concern about recent developments in the relationship between Ethiopia and Somalia.

Notably, he refrains from mentioning the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in Addis Ababa on Monday.

"IGAD is diligently monitoring the situation and recognizes the potential implications for regional stability,” Dr. Gebeyehu stated.

In light of these circumstances, the Executive Secretary is urging IGAD leaders to take prompt action. He appeals to the two sisterly countries to "collaborate towards a peaceful and amicable resolution of the situation, upholding the shared values that unite the IGAD family.”

Following Monday’s MOU, Ethiopia announced its consideration of recognizing Somaliland as an independent state. In response, the Somali government in Mogadishu declared the MOU illegitimate, rejecting its terms as a violation of territorial integrity.

IGAD, an eight-country trade bloc in Africa, emphasizes its unwavering commitment to promoting peace, stability, cooperation, and regional integration. IGAD’s member countries include Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, and Uganda.
