Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, describing how passengers of a tuk-tuk taxi and residents of nearby houses were among those affected by the blast.
MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) – Officials in Afgoye, a town located in the Lower Shabelle region, have confirmed a devastating suicide explosion that occurred on Wednesday, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving more than ten individuals wounded.

The bombing targeted a security checkpoint within the town, causing significant damage and casualties, with most of the victims being civilians in close proximity to the explosion.

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, describing how passengers of a tuk-tuk taxi and residents of nearby houses were among those affected by the blast.


"The who area turned chaotic and dust. The bombing created a hole on the hospital parameter. A passing-by passenger bajaj ‘tuk tuk’ is burnt down,” said eyewitness Hassan Nur.

The tragic event unfolded amidst growing concerns voiced by local security officials regarding the escalating presence of armed individuals, exacerbating insecurity within Afgoye, situated just 30 kilometers from the capital city of Mogadishu.

"Insecurity has been on the rise in the past few days. We will work on fighting the armed men who are now part of the insecurity,” remarked a local security official.

Mohamed Ali Mohamed, the commander of the Afgoye police station, affirmed that security forces are mobilizing to conduct operations aimed at bolstering the town’s security measures in the wake of the attack.

While past incidents have seen the notorious Al-Shabaab militant group perpetrate bombings in Afgoye, it remains unclear whether they have claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s bombing.

The devastating impact of this latest attack underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to safeguard the residents of Afgoye from further violence and instability.
