    Somalia: African Union Chairperson visits Mogadishu, promises support despite financial constraints

Mogadishu, Somalia (Horn Observer) The African Union Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf arrived in Mogadishu for a two day working visit and met with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. Discussion of the leaders focused combatting terrorism.

Mr. Youssouf said that AU needs to continue to deploy at most effort needed and the goal of launching AUSOM by July this year and are committed to improve the way AU is delivering its services.

 "There's still some challenges financially speaking and logistic challenges. But I think the goodwill is here, the readiness is here. We are committed to improve the way we are delivering services as the African Union.” Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, AU chairperson said "I also would like to this to seize this opportunity to pay tribute to all the foreign soldiers and From the Somali Defense Forces, I think this is the price of peace and stability that they have paid with their own lives. But we need to continue to pursue our efforts.”Mr. Youssouf added.

"The African Union will continue to support the Somali government to restore security and promote peace in Somalia.” Mr. Youssouf added.

The AU leader met separately both Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza and discussed enhancing the relationship and partnership between the African Union and Somalia, with a particular focus on security, combating extremism, and the new African Union mission in Somalia AUSSOM.

The visit comes amid the Somali government launched an offensive against the Shabab, which Somalia listed as a terror organization and conserable gains have been reported in several fronts in Middle Shabelle region.

With air support from Somalia partners, Shabab have gone into disarray with its leaders forced to go into hiding, after series of airstrikes on the group’s stronghold in Jilib in Middle Jubba region.
