HARGEISA (HORN OBSERVER) Somaliland authorities on Monday arrested a local TV reporter working for the privately owned SAAB TV, after reporting a road accident involving a police vehicle in Hargeisa, local media and journalists said.

Police in Hargeisa on Monday summoned journalist Ali Fahad Jama and later arrested him.  SAAB TV colleagues said Mr. Jama was taken into police custody.

The reason behind his arrest is still sketchy and Somaliland police did not officially comment on the arrest. However, local journalists said he was arrested following a Facebook post about a police car which collided with a civilian car, resulting at least one civilian to sustain serious injury.

"The police pickup truck sped from the scene of the accident at Isha Borame neighbourhood  in Hargeisa without assessing the damages to the civilian car whose driver was unconscious following the accident," said Jama's report.

The journalist remained in the police cell, despite there were no charges brought against him.

The SAAB TV journalist's arrest comes two days after release of freelance journalist, Abdimalik Muse Oldon who was held for more than one year and 49 in jail for criticising Somaliland government.

Meanwhile, radio Hiigsi journalist Mohamed Abduwahaab Abuuja is currently imprisoned in Somali capital, Mogadishu for over three months now for hid critical article on president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo's security forces.
