MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - Somalia's Lower House members have extended the mandate of President Mohamed Farmajo by two years in what could further create potential political crisis.

The 275-member chamber voted for the resolution whose text focused on the elections rather than a direct nod to the president for an extended stay in office. By a show of hands, 149 MPs voted to approve the resolution.

The endorsed resolution also gave Somalia’s National electoral Commission two years ultimatum to hold elections in the country.

The resolution ordered the National Independent Elections Commission (NIEC) to organize elections in two years based on a one-person-one-vote basis.

Villa Somalia immediately welcomed the resolution terming it ‘historic.’

"This followed after the failure of FMS members to support the implementation of the initial Sep 17, 2020 Agreement,” said a statement from Villa Somalia, Farmaajo’s official residence in Mogadishu. "This followed after the failure of FMS members to support the implementation of the initial Sep 17, 2020 Agreement,”

The move comes hours after former Somali president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed warned Farmajo against extension.

"It is a national betrayal that instead of reaching an agreement on elections, the government is seeking a term extension, we are telling the outgoing leadership, you have gone astray, come back, and do not lead Somalia back to where it came from, ” Sheikh Sharif warned the government” "This country cannot tolerate term extensions and electoral fraud, economically, politically and security-wise, It is a country whose governance is still in its infancy, we need to think about the consequences of the reckless actions of our predecessors.”

On Sunday, UN, AU, EU and IGAD warned against any parallel process saying they will not support partial elections and new initiatives leading to any extension of prior mandates.

The organization expressed serious concern that the political stalemate is impacting negatively on peace, security, stability, and prosperity in Somalia and beyond.
