Mogadishu, Somalia (Horn Observer) — The Federal Government of Somalia and the Government of Tanzania have signed a visa-on-arrival agreement allowing their citizens to travel more easily between the two countries, while Somalia has also been formally authorized to issue the East African Community (EAC) passport, marking twin milestones in the country's push for deeper regional integration, local media reported.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, Brig. Gen. Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartag, and Tanzania’s Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Patrobas Paschal Katambi, representing the United Republic of Tanzania. The agreement is expected to ease travel restrictions, promote trade and tourism, and deepen diplomatic relations between the two nations, according to a statement posted on the Ministry's official account on X formerly twitter

In a parallel development, the Federal Republic of Somalia received official clearance to begin issuing the EAC passport after its design and security features were approved in line with regional standards. The authorization allows Somalia to start issuing the passport.

Somalia joined the EAC in 2023 as its eighth member. The regional bloc aims to promote economic integration, facilitate the free movement of people, and strengthen political cooperation among East African states.

The official authorization was handed over by Somalia’s Ambassador to Tanzania and Permanent Representative to the EAC, Ambassador Ilyas Ali Hassan, to Minister Fartag and the Director General of the Immigration and Citizenship Agency, Mustafa Sheikh Ahmed Dhuhulow.

The twin developments underscore Somalia’s efforts to reinforce its diplomatic presence in East Africa and expand opportunities for its citizens through increased mobility and regional cooperation. Analysts say the measures could boost business exchanges, educational opportunities, and cross-border partnerships across the region.
