    Somaliland journalist held for reporting an alleged corruption is now freed

    MOGADISHU, Somalia (HORN OBSERVER) Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS), a journalist union and press freedom advocate welcomed the release of Adan Abdi Idle by Hargeisa Court on Wednesday.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (HORN OBSERVER) Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS), a journalist union and press freedom advocate welcomed the release of Adan Abdi Idle by Hargeisa Court on Wednesday.


The union further called upon Somaliland authorities to release other jailed journalists.

The journalist’s arrest, who spent 14 days in police custody, follows a publication of an article and photos allegingSomaliland Central Bank governor Ali Baghdadi over corruption.

"SJS welcomes freedom of journalist Adan Abdi Idle by Hargeisa Court today after spending 14 days in police custody.His arrest was ordered by Somaliland Central Bank Governor Ali Baghdadi over a publication or an article and photos alleging the Governor of corruption,” SJS tweeted.

Currently journalist Abdiqadir Mohamed is detained in Borame police station after he was taken from his residence on the dawn on the Friday 23 April over a video he recorded from a critic imam called Sheikh Hassan Diheye who calls for greater Somalia and denounce Somaliland’s breakaway campaign.

Journalists in Somaliland continuously face significant restrictions and arrests by the state. Media stations are also targeted with blockage and police raids for covering critically on the government and the security.

On Tuesday, the United States Embassy in Mogadishu condemned all attacks on journalists and independent media in Somalia, shortly after a local radio station was raided and sent off-air in Mogadishu.
