Nairobi – Kenya (Horn Observer) Over the weekend, US Secretary of State, Mr. Antony Blinken issued a tough statement over the United States' government's growing concern over the military blockade of humanitarian access to parts of the Tigray region.

"This unacceptable behavior places 5.2 million people in the region in immediate need of humanitarian assistance at even greater risk." read part of his statement.

The United States termed the actions reprehensible and called on both the Eritrean and Ethiopian governments to take immediate action that will make their forces step back. The hard-hitting statement also called on all parties to comply with obligations under international humanitarian law, especially those relevant to the protection of civilians.

The Secretary of State's statement confirmed that there were many credible reports of armed forces in Tigray committing acts of violence against civilians, including gender-based violence and other human rights abuses and atrocities. It also highlighted the conduct of the Eritrean Defense Forces and Amhara regional forces, noting that they have been particularly egregious.

The statement also noted that the continued presence of Eritrean forces in Tigray undermines Ethiopia’s stability and national unity. Calling upon the Government of Eritrea to remove its forces from Tigray. The US questioned why both Eritrean and Ethiopian authorities have repeatedly promised such a withdrawal, but have not acted.

The statement also urged the Government of Ethiopia to withdraw Amhara regional forces from the Tigray region and ensure that effective control of western Tigray is returned to the Transitional Government of Tigray. The statement implored Prime Minister Abiy and President Isaias to hold all those responsible for atrocities accountable.
