Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (Horn Observer) Saudi Arabia and Somalia have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense and military cooperation in the Saudi capital of Riyad, a move that analysts say could bolster security across the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

 

The agreement, which was signed on the sidelines of the World Defense Show 2026 in Saudi Arabia, was signed by Somalia's Defense Minister Ahmed Fiqi. While specific details of the agreement were not fully disclosed, reliable sources indicate it could accelerate several other fronts including the fight against counter terrorism and underscores Saudi Arabia’s strategic expanding its influence in the horn of Africa region.

The defense cooperation comes shortly after Israel recognized Somaliland as a sovereign state - a move that angered Somalia and drew concern from its international partners, including Saudi Arabia.

The MoU is expected to enhance Somalia’s security sector by improving military training, operational capabilities, and overall defense readiness.
