Addis Ababa (Horn Observer) Ethiopian parliament on Wednesday extended the term of the houses and councils of the regional states in 114 votes in favor, 4 against and one abstention, a move that delays the scheduled elections for August indefinitely, Ethiopian News Agency reported.
Many opposition parties warn any delay to the scheduled elections in August could put the security of the country at risk.
The decision extends, according to the parliament, the terms of both Houses and Councils of the Regional States until global health institutions confirmed that COVID-19 pandemic is not a health threat and further approved by the parliament, further affirming the government's willingness to stay in power until next General Elections.
Its not yet clear when WHO will announce that the COVID19, a global pandemic will be over and the world business resumes to normalcy.
The vote also angered opposition lawmakers which led to the resignation of the speaker of the House of Federation Keria Ibrahim, a top official from the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).
