MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - Al-Shabaab militant group has rejected the use of COVID-19 inoculation barely two weeks after Somalia launched COVID-19 vaccinations.

MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - Al-Shabaab militant group has rejected the use of COVID-19 inoculation barely two weeks after Somalia launched COVID-19 vaccinations.
The group’s Office of Politics and Wilaayaat in a statement warned people against using the AstraZeneca vaccination, as its harms far outweigh its alleged benefits.

"Rather than strengthen the immune system and contribute to the prevention of the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, the AstraZeneca vaccine –rolled out by UNICEF and administered by the apostate Somali regime –does more harm than good and has an array of adverse side effects as illustrated by many health professionals and proven in medical researches around the world,” the statement reads in part.

Al-Shabaab which has been fighting Somali government for the last 10 year controls several towns and villages in central and southern Somalia.

On 15 March 2020, Somalia received 300 000 doses of Oxford AstraZeneca vaccines from the COVAX Facility to protect frontline workers and elderly people with chronic health conditions from COVID-19.

The government established over 30 local vaccination sites in Mogadishu to help people get registered and receive their COVID-19 vaccines.

Over 500 people have died of Coronavirus in Somalia since last year when the first case of the virus was recorded in the horn of Africa Nation.

The total number of confirmed cases in the country stands at 11,164 cases after 187 of 1,220 samples tested positive.
