MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) - The UN has voiced its concern over the escalating violence in Somalia calling for restrain and dialogue.

UN Secretary-General urged all sides to give room for dialogue even as both the government and opposition allied militias reinforce their sides.

"He (Guterres) reiterates his call for all Somali stakeholders to refrain from further violence and resolve their differences through dialogue and compromise,” spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said.

The UN head, Dujarric said noted the September 2020 Agreement and the Baidoa Framework were the only basis for resolving the electoral stalemate.

The remarks echo similar sentiments voiced by foreign missions in Mogadishu.

The missions including the UN, US. EU and a host of other countries and blocs expressed concern over the violence witnessed in the last 48 hours in Mogadishu and called for dialogue.

"We have repeatedly warned that the extension of mandates would lead to a political crisis and undermine peace, stability and security in Somalia,” the joint statement read in part.

"In the wake of the violence on 25 April, we urge all sides to exercise maximum restraint, resume dialogue, and avoid unilateral actions that may lead to a further escalation.”

Despite calls for restrain, tensions remain high in Mogadishu as government and opposition forces take sides amid fears of a clash.  Hundreds if not thousands of families fled Mogadishu Tuesday morning for fear of fresh violence.
