MOGADISHU – The Independent Anti-Corruption Commission of the Federal Government of Somalia has today elected its Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson in Mogadishu.

At a highly contested election in Mogadishu, members of the Commission unanimously voted for Mohamed Hussein Hamud as the Chairperson of the Independent Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission while Dr. Hassan Khalif Hassan was elected as the Deputy Chair of the Commission. The elected officials will serve for the next 5 years.

The voting took place with the presence of observers from the two chambers of the Federal Parliament, representatives from the Office of the President and the Office of the Prime Minister and the media.

The election of the Commission’s office bearers follows a week after the Members of the Commission were sworn-in with the presence of the President, H.E Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.

Following his election victory, the new Chairperson of the Independent Anti-Corruption Commission of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mohamed Hussein Hamud said starting from today, the Commission will formally establish its departments and will begin its duties in line with international standards in the fight against the graft which is one of the most difficult obstacles against the good governance and the re-establishment of Somali federal government institutions.

"We all aware how corruption eroded the progress of our governance, tarnished the image of our society, and damaged the morals and ethics of our people. I salute the Somali people and its Government that we are today on the path to truth, justice and development, as we have overcome many obstacles to realize our successful journey of rebuilding and restoring the trust of our people and the international community in our government institutions,” said Avv. Hamud.

"In addition to being a global problem, corruption is a serious disease and a vicious practice that has wreaked havoc on the governance and socio-economic vision of our Nation. It has become necessary for us to develop laws and regulations that are in line with our government plans.”

"The Independent Anti-Corruption Commission of the Federal Government of Somalia will monitor all government agencies, individuals and companies that are entrusted to provide public services to the Somali people. We urge all individuals and officials in the public service to perform their duties with integrity and honesty, free from bias, favoritism, bribery and nepotism. We also call for Somali citizens to support us in executing our mandate in line with the Constitution,” Chairperson Avv. Hamud concludes.
