    Ethiopia postpones general Elections for 2 weeks

    Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) The Ethiopian government said that it will postpone the general elections for a period of two weeks, in what they say was to ensure adequate voter registration, the Ethiopian News Agency reported.

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) The Ethiopian government said that it will postpone the general elections for a period of two weeks, in what they say was to ensure adequate voter registration, the Ethiopian News Agency reported.

The board's Chairperson, Birtukan Midekssaannounced this after a discussion between the board and various political parties more time was needed to fully finalize their preparations to enable them to hold elections simultaneously and on the same day across the country.

The chair revealed that this extension was necessitated to ensure adequate voter registration and the delay in opening voter registration centers in some parts of the country.

There was also the matter of delays in the printing of ballot papers by ten days and this resulted in the postponement of the recruitment of election supervisors.

Before the postponement, the election days were scheduled for June 5 and June 12 for regional states and city administration respectively. According to the chair, this changed after the board held discussions with political parties and settles for elections to be conducted on one day across the country.

The board revealed that some 36.2 million eligible voters had registered and some 46,088 polling stations would be used.
